MISZCZYK’s debut album brings together a constellation of musicians – young and old, spanning the globe, beloved by fans or yet unknown. On Thyrsis of Etna, the Ontario producer creates spellbinding backdrops for vocalists and instrumental contributors including Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier, Pylon’s Vanessa Briscoe Hay, The Space Lady, Marker Starling, Chad VanGaalen, Motorists’ Craig Fahner, and many more. MISZCZYK's soundscapes are smoky, degraded, and dubbed out with spectral effects, yet the vocalists ring out like a rare chorus.

“Giving everybody the creative freedom to do whatever they wanted meant that I was inviting chaos as a bedfellow,” says MISZCZYK. “Somehow, welcoming 16 different singers to have their way with the music created a vibe that was more than anything I could have asked for.”

Thyrsis of Etna opens with “In The Dark”, as Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier intones words with trademark hypnotic tranquillity. Nigerian rapper NAI provides a striking contrast on “Runaway, I Age”, immediately followed by “The Garden”, where swirling synth arpeggios merge with the post-punk squawk of Pylon’s Vanessa Hay. Motorists’ Craig Fahner oozes charisma on the strutting groove of “Lunar Days”, before The Space Lady touches down on “End Credits”, closing the album with a shimmering lysergic lullaby. Elsewhere, it features members of the extended We Are Time family (Chandra, New Chance, Bile Sister), Sub Pop recording artist Chad VanGaalen, and Kate Bush collaborator Colin Lloyd Tucker.

After receiving the contributions from these artists, the studio surgery phase is where MISZCZYK was in his element. Inspired by maverick producers such as Geoff Barrow, Conny Plank, and Bruiser Brigade’s Raphy, he fused analog and electronic sources to achieve the otherworldly sounds in his head. “Process music really excites me,” says MISZCZYK. “I love getting hands-on with the medium, recording to a four-track, then overdubbing slick-sounding digital effects. Or recording a snare, dubbing it onto a cassette, and then back into my computer. I’ve even bounced vocals through a minidisc.”

The album’s collision of formats creates a foggy sense of timelessness, so you can’t put a finger on the year it was made. Juxtaposing the voices of his cult-star collaborators with sounds dissipating into strange new shapes, it strives to achieve a feeling of heightened reality, less concerned with pristine recordings than the textures that connect them. “Sound and audio are two different things,” says MISZCZYK. “Fidelity is audio’s replication of the sound, and how close to real life it is. That’s great, but what if you want to get far away from real life? That’s when you’re making decisions, putting things together, and creating art.”

During his formative years as a beatmaker, MISZCZYK’s projects included hip-hop group Bread & Water, featuring a teenage Shad. Years later, while working as in-house engineer at Toronto’s Royal Mountain Records, MISZCZYK produced hyperactive indie rock band Hollerado, legendary proto-punks Simply Saucer, and garage rock hero Mark “BBQ” Sultan. These days, MISZCZYK has switched his focus to teaching university sound design courses, while performing as the bassist with New York post-punk icon CHANDRA. His fingerprints can be found on countless releases, yet nothing could have anticipated Thyrsis of Etna, featuring artists as far flung as France, Nigeria, and Athens, Georgia. “I was excited to work with people from all walks of life, all over the world,” says MISZCZYK. “With the connectivity that we have now, this album feels like a global village.”
